Billy Joseph Van De Velde

Billy J. "Vande" Van De Velde, 93, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on September 1, 2026, at a skilled nursing facility in Dublin, Ohio.

Born July 4, 1933, in Moline, Illinois, to Philip J. "Flip" and Helen M. (Larson) Van De Velde, Bill graduated from Moline Senior High School with the class of 1951. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 and received an honorable discharge.

Bill made his life and his life's work in Columbus. He earned his BFA degree in Advertising Design from the Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) in 1961. Following graduation, he left Columbus for Chicago to work for an advertising design studio. In 1963, then CCAD President Joseph Canzani, offered him the job of heading up the Division of Advertising Design. His career at the school would span thirty-seven years when he retired in 2000 as Professor Emeritus. From CCAD he received the Alumni Award in 1987, an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 2000, and in 2003 he received the Joseph V. Canzani Award for Alumni Excellence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Helen; his sister, Betty L. Ferrier; and his nephew, Blair Ferrier.

Bill will be laid to rest alongside his parents at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in East Moline, Illinois. No services will be held.

His life was one of creativity, dedication, service, and teaching. His legacy will live on through the many students he taught, the colleagues and friends he worked alongside, and the countless people whose lives were touched by his guidance and friendship. He will be remembered with affection, respect, and gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
