Charles William "Bill" Hall

September 22, 1947 — February 16, 2026

The Esteemed Sheriff of Leonard Road, Charles William “Bill” Hall, took his final ride into the sunset in the early morning hours of February 16, 2026. Born September 22, 1947, in Columbus to the late Thomas and Eva (Paugh) Hall, Bill lived a life defined by service, humor, and a deep-seated love for his community.

A Life of Service and Spirit

A graduate of Marion-Franklin High School, Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His professional journey was as eclectic as his personality: from managing Zantigo in Lancaster and selling cars with flair, to his final career in logistics at DSCC, where he retired in 2011.

The Farm and the "Sheriff"

Following a "fiery courtship," Bill married Margo Hecht on July 21, 1973. In 1979, they moved to the family farm, a setting that would become the backdrop for his greatest passions. What began with a single Standardbred named Tucker, grew into a lifelong dedication to the equine community and Fairfield County 4-H.

Affectionately known as “Sheriff Bill,” he was a beloved volunteer of the Rough Riders 4-H club. He spent decades hosting clinics and bonfires, announcing fair shows, and providing gentle beginner horses for new riders. Whether he was offering patient guidance to a young equestrian or donning his “Uncle Sam” persona to ride “The Eagle” in local parades, Bill’s presence was larger than life.

One of the highlights of the horse farm was hosting students from The Ohio State Schools for the Blind and Deaf. For years, Bill and Margo opened their farm for cider pressing, carriage rides, and horse encounters, providing both the students and the Rough Riders volunteers with unforgettable memories.

Family and Legacy

Bill was a man of quick wit and "one-of-a-kind" humor who found his greatest joy in a crowded bonfire circle.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Margo; his children, Kelly Hettinger, William “Little Bill” Hall, and Cathy (husband Chris, though Bill insisted on calling him “Bob”) Strohm. He was a proud grandfather to Dustin (Macie) Love, Jerahmey Pruden, Jacob Hettinger, Garret Hettinger, Lorelei McKinney, and Keegan McKinney; and a great-grandfather to Leland Love. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, dear friends, and his many "deputies."

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and his younger brother, Douglas Hall.
