Dan Bastin, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026.

He was born August 5, 1936, in Mount Vernon to Daniel E. and M. Ruth (Daily) Bastin. Dan was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University, a Master of Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Master of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He was an accomplished scholar who never stopped learning.

Dan devoted his life and career to helping others, guided by his faith and a desire to serve. Whether through ministry, social work, or counseling, he made a lasting impact on the communities he served. He loved his work and continued it well into his late 70s. He was a true Jeep man, driving many into the ground while commuting between Columbus and Chillicothe. He was proud of his hometown of Mount Vernon and was also an advocate for Pittsburgh and the state of Maine.

Dan was a friend to everyone he met. He had an infectious laugh, was quick with a compliment, and had a gift for making people feel valued, seen, and appreciated. He loved to read and cherished time spent with his loved ones. He was rarely seen without a tie and never failed to clean his plate. He had a particular fondness for ice cream or a tall glass of milk—fuel for his dedication to lifting weights well into his late 80s.

Dan lived many wonderful years and always had a story to tell. His humor, faith, and genuine interest in people made him memorable to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He spent his final years at Oakleaf in Columbus, OH, where he quickly became known as “the neighbor.” He shared his love of Mr. Rogers with fellow residents and caregivers alike, and “Dan the Man” became quite popular throughout the facility. Even in his later years, he continued to connect with people, make them smile, and leave an impression. He lived a full and meaningful life, and he will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his children; Dan, Julie Campbell (Phil), Jaime Krafthefer, Nathaniel (Laura) and Colin and grandchildren: Aidan, Riley and Owen. Besides his parents; he was preceded in death by his daughter Rebekah and his brother Richie (Joan).

A memorial service will be on 9/12 at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Vernon. Immediately following the service, the Bastin family will greet friends and have a time of fellowship.
