In Loving Memory of

Darnell “Doc” Stowers

February 1952 – October 7, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we celebrate the life of Darnell “Doc” Stowers, who was born in February 1952, in Columbus, Ohio, and passed away unexpectedly on October 7, 2026, at the age of 74.

Known affectionately as “Doc,” Darnell was a hardworking and loving father, grandfather, brother, friend, and coach. His life was defined by his devotion to family, his commitment to serving others, and his passion for teaching meaningful life lessons. He was the kind of person who showed up when he was needed, generously offering his time, guidance, and support to those fortunate enough to know him.

Darnell graduated from East High School in 1970. He went on to build a career with Ohio Bell, where he worked for more than 20 years. Later, he continued serving his community as a driver, transporting individuals with disabilities throughout Columbus. Whether at work, on the court, or in everyday life, Doc demonstrated the importance of hard work, dependability, and compassion.

One of Doc’s greatest passions was coaching. From 1974 to 1984, he coached Eastland Athletics, sharing far more than his love of the game. He used coaching as an opportunity to teach life lessons, build character, and help shape the lives of the young people he mentored. For Doc, the game was never simply about winning or losing; it was about learning, growing, and preparing for life beyond the court. His influence reached far beyond the game, leaving lessons and memories that remained with his players for years to come.

Doc also found great joy in the simple moments that brought his family together. He was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan who enjoyed reading books and watching baseball with his children and grandchildren. These times, filled with conversation, laughter, and togetherness, became treasured memories that his family will carry in their hearts always.

One of Doc’s favorite sayings was, “There are no new games, just new players.” When they were growing up, his children may not have fully understood the meaning behind those words. With time and life experience, however, they came to appreciate the wisdom he was sharing. His saying served as a reminder that although people and circumstances may change, the lessons of life remain. Those words shaped their outlook and will continue to guide them for generations to come.

Darnell was preceded in death by his parents, Lucien “L.C.” Stowers and Carrie I. Stowers; his brother, Strengther “Stretch” Stowers; and his grandson, Darren Keith Jones II.

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Darnell “Doc” Stowers. He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings, Carnell Stowers (Edith) and Carrie Evelyn Stowers; his children, Brian Stowers (Dawn), Anitra Reid (Ricky), Michelle Stowers, and Shanelle Stowers; his bonus daughter, Kimberly Robertson; his grandchildren, Devon Jones (Taylor), Ajani Stowers, Cyntaira Montgomery, Jaxson Stowers, Courtney Wilder, and Juliana Wilder; and his great-grandchildren, Nola and Margot Jones. He also leaves a host of extended family members, friends, former players, and all those whose lives he touched through his love, guidance, and friendship.

Rest peacefully, Doc. Your lessons will live on, your legacy will endure, and you will never be forgotten.

“There are no new games, just new players.”
