Herbert E. Strickland III, age 74, of Galion, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2026.
Born in Elyria, Ohio, Herbert was the son of the late Herbert Edwin Strickland II and Thelma Jane Strickland.
Following high school, Herbert proudly served his country in the United States Army. He later spent his working years in industrial maintenance, where his mechanical abilities and love of working with his hands served him well.
Affectionately known as “Happy Herb,” Herb truly lived up to his nickname. With his ever-present smile, positive outlook on life, and genuine love for people, he had a way of making everyone around him feel welcome. He never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone, always eager to meet someone new, share a laugh, and see where the conversation might lead.
Herb had a lifelong passion for restoring cars, working with his hands, and enjoying the outdoors. He loved traveling the country, exploring national parks, and discovering new places along the way. Whether he was bringing an old car back to life, working on a project outside, or setting off on another adventure, Herb embraced life with enthusiasm and an appreciation for the simple things that brought him joy.
Herb is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Knapik and her husband, Martin Knapik; his son, Dakotah Strickland and his wife, Nadine Strickland; and his five grandchildren, Jaden Strickland, Jaxson Strickland, Dylan Duncan, Cynthia Duncan, and Shelbi Webb.
He is also survived by his brothers, Thomas Strickland (Robin), Dennis Strickland (Bonnie), and Stephen Strickland (Becky); and his sister, Cyndi Newsom.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Edwin Strickland II and Thelma Jane Strickland.
In keeping with the family's wishes, no memorial service will be held at this time. A Celebration of Life honoring Herb will take place in the summer of 2027, with additional details to be announced at a later date.
Though he will be deeply missed, those who knew Herb will forever remember the joy he brought into their lives. His life serves as a beautiful reminder to greet each day with a smile, embrace every adventure, and never miss an opportunity to make someone else's day a little brighter.
Keep smiling, Happy Herb. Your happiness lives on in all of us.
