Michael Anders

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Joseph Anders, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, bother, and friend. Mike departed this life on August 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on September 19, 1942, in Lancaster, Ohio, Michael was the cherished son of Georgia (Fadner) and Denver Anders as well as Joseph and Maurada Burke. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Gary Burke and Patrick Anders, as well as his stepson, Matthew Barnes. He is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Karen, and his loving children Michele (Anders) Lawrence, Teresa (Chad) Thomas, and Jeremy (April) Barnes. Michael was a proud grandfather to Mackenzie and Jakob Lawrence, Taylor and Cameron Thomas, and Alex and Lilly Barnes. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, his sisters, Kathleen "Kitten" (Bill) Birch, Peggy Gillum, and Valerie Andrews, his sisters-in-law Susie Bowers and Sharon Burke, and several nieces and nephews.

A proud graduate of Lancaster High School in 1960, Mike went on to serve his country with distinction as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. After his military service, he embarked on a career as a journeyman ironworker with the Iron Workers Local Union #172, from which he retired in 2003.

Mike could often be found at the bowling alley or the golf course. His love for golf began at age 12 with his first set of clubs, and it was a passion that grew with him throughout his life. He won his first partner tournament at just 13 and captured the Class B Division of the Lancaster Jaycee-Coca Cola tournament at 14. His golfing prowess led him to serve as the assistant golf pro at York Temple Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio. Michael's talent shone brightly, as evidenced by his multiple holes-in-one, including a memorable 152-yard shot with an 8-iron at age 17.

His golfing achievements extended to participating twice in the pro-am of the prestigious Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club, experiences he cherished deeply.

Mike's life was characterized by a profound love for his family. He was a man of complexity and depth, whose unwavering devotion to his loved ones was evident. He came when needed, whether it was driving 16 hours to comfort a grieving daughter, or calling the highway patrol to admonish the officer who reduced his daughter to tears over her first ticket. When everything went sideways during a cross-country move, he offered the simplest and strongest reassurance: he would be back to move her home if it didn't work out as she had hoped. Those who knew him best -his wife, his daughter and stepchildren, and his grandchildren -recognized that same unwavering loyalty in the way he showed up for each of them.

Cremation has already taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Michael's memory to the Alzheimer's Research Association.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Licking Memorial Hospital and Ohio's Hospice for their compassionate and dedicated care.

Michael Anders' life was a testament to love, loyalty, and passion. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
