Michael Anthony Gillespie, age 81, of Cleveland, Ohio (and more recently Columbus, Ohio), passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 23, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to parents William and Marie Gillespie, Michael grew up in Philadelphia with his brothers James and Mark (deceased). He later moved to Ohio, where he built a successful career in the scrap metal industry. Known for his strong work ethic and straightforward manner, he earned the respect of many in the Cleveland business community over his decades in the field.
Michael had a deep love for the water and cherished his time boating on Lake Erie. Whether navigating the waves, enjoying a quiet day on the boat, or sharing stories with family and friends dockside, the lake brought him great joy and peace. Sixteen years ago, he and his wife Susan moved to Ft. Myers, Florida, where they spent their winters. There, Michael enjoyed fishing and spending time at the beach. Three years ago, they purchased a condo in Columbus, Ohio, to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan (Tucker) Gillespie; his son, Michael Gillespie Jr. (wife Amy); his daughter, Lisa Saurer (husband Andrew); and his four cherished grandchildren, Ari, Frankie, Audrey, and Scarlett. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud father, and loving grandfather who took great delight in his family.A celebration of life will be held for close family and friends. May he rest in peace on the waters he loved.
