It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Randall J Smith, affectionately known to many as Randy or Bill. Born on November 27, 1956, Randy departed peacefully on May 17, 2025, in Dayton, following a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer.

A dedicated public servant, Randy committed his professional life to the pursuit of justice and community betterment. He most recently served as Law Director at Miami Valley Community Action Partnership in Dayton, where his impact was deeply felt. His distinguished career also included roles at Legal Aid, as Law Director for the City of Greenfield, and as a Board Director of the Home Building and Loan Co. in Greenfield. Early in his career, he was a partner at Smith and Quance. Randy was an alumnus of Greenfield McClain High School (Class of 1975), Wittenberg University, and Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

One of six children born to Robert J Smith and Chelsie (James) Smith in Greenfield, Ohio, Randy was the cherished family prankster. His mischievous spirit, especially during infamous gift exchanges, brought immeasurable laughter and joy to all who knew him. The sound of laughter was a constant when Randy was near.

Randy will be most enduringly remembered for his immense generosity and his passionate dedication to a diverse range of causes. He was a fervent advocate for animal welfare, a staunch supporter of civil rights and social action, and deeply committed to economic empowerment, human rights, and comprehensive social services. His unwavering dedication to creating a more just and compassionate world touched countless lives, most notably that of his dear friend Ray.

He leaves behind his sister, Risa Smith; his brothers, Ronald Smith and Ritchy Smith; and his sister-in-law, Julie McCray. He is also survived by his nieces, Caitlin (Kristoffer) Donhowe and K.C. (Craig) Marshall, and their wonderful children, Matti and Risa Donhowe, and Crosby, Beck, and Hayes Marshall, who will carry his memory forward.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Robert J Smith and Chelsie (James) Smith; his brother, Robert Smith Jr.; his sister, Rebecca Smith Quance; and his brother-in-law, Peter Quance.

In accordance with Randy's wishes, there will be no formal services. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family kindly requests that you honor his memory by hugging your pet or rescuing an animal in his memory.
