Richard C Gemmell

Richard C. “Rick” Gemmell, 72, of Heath, passed away on November 19, 2025. Born on August 20, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Walter and Dorothy (Black) Gemmell.

Rick graduated from Heath High School in 1971 and went on to attend Ashland College. An exceptional athlete, he excelled in baseball, basketball, and football. He shared his love and knowledge of sports coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball touching the lives of many youth athletes in the community.

Rick was a devoted and loving husband and father. Some of his happiest moments were often spent fishing, golfing, or on the softball field. He also enjoyed the simpler pleasures of a casual card game; particularly euchre and poker.

Rick established his own painting and wall covering business in Naples, Florida where he lived for 23 years before moving his family and business back to his hometown thirty years ago.

He had a way of making people feel welcome and comfortable. He leaves behind countless memories filled with laughter. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Rick is survived by his wife of 40 years, Louise; his sons, Zachary and Matthew; and his beloved pup, Shanna. He is also survived by his brothers Gordon (Marcia), Chuck, and Kenny (Michelle); his brother-in-law, Joe Purtell; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his sister, Joanne L. Purtell.

A celebration of his life will take place Sunday, November 30th at 2pm at The United Church Of Granville, 115 W Broadway, officiated by Rev. Dr. Dwight Davidson.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Licking County Humane Society, 825 Thornwood Dr. SW.
