Richard Wilburn Johnson

February 27, 1956 — July 14, 2025

Richard Wilburn Johnson (69) passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, July 14, 2025 in Columbus, Ohio. He was born in Dayton, Ohio on February 27, 1956 to Nettie Mae and Winford Guy Johnson. He is survived by his three children—Jessica (Anthony) Weikert, Brooke Bohinc, and Reed (Kara) Johnson; two grandchildren—Beatrice and Ellis Bohinc; two brothers—Lynville (Donna) Johnson and Mark (Connie) Johnson; and his sister, Marsha Johnson.

Rick moved from the city of Dayton to the rural town of Laura, Ohio, before finishing his life in the Columbus area. He spent the majority of his career at Broadway Sand & Gravel, driving to and from in his red pickup truck, with at least two packs of Big Red tucked into the coin compartment—always willing to share, especially with his children. Even years after his time there ended, Rick could often be found wearing the company’s logo on a well-worn black baseball cap.

A collector at heart, Rick held on to items not just for their use, but for their stories. From matchbooks and wrenches to oil lamps and vintage clocks, he treasured the personal history behind each piece. What he left in the care of his children will be well-loved and shared with others who appreciate his generosity and the sentiment stitched into the things he saved.

The love of his life was Jane Johnson, his wife of 44 years. Though their marriage ended before his passing, their bond formed a strong foundation from which their children grew. Rick was also a devoted grandfather. Time with his grandkids was never rushed—he let them lead the way, following their curiosity with a patient heart and gentle presence.

In his final years, Rick found comfort and connection through his involvement with Vineyard Columbus. His church community offered him both purpose and peace, and he gave back in kind.

In lieu of flowers or a formal service, the family invites those who wish to honor Rick’s memory to consider a donation to a cause close to his heart. Contributions may be made to:

Scouting America, an organization that Rick actively participated in as a youth, sparking his appreciation for the outdoors and the value of hands-on learning.

Ohio’s Hospice, which was an organization he donated to after his parents’ deaths and a place of comfort for his family during his own passing.

These donations are a meaningful way to celebrate Rick’s life and the love he shared with so many. Please also consider sharing a favorite memory or photo below to help us honor and remember him.
