Robert Kelley

May 24, 1964 — April 4, 2025

Robert “Bob” Kelley, of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away on April 4, 2025, at the age of 60. He was born on May 24, 1964, in Alliance, Ohio to Harold and Patricia (Sanders) Kelley. Bob’s life was one marked by deep passion, unwavering dedication to music, and a profound impact on those fortunate enough to know him.

A 1982 graduate of West Branch High School and a 1992 graduate of DeVry University, Bob combined technical knowledge with creative brilliance throughout his life. As a Field Service Engineer, Bob worked for Cepheid, Abbott, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer and Ciba Corning. But it was music that truly defined Bob’s journey. A gifted multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, harmony singer, engineer, producer, technician, and songwriter, Bob immersed himself in every facet of the musical world. His love for music wasn’t just a hobby—it was a calling.

In 2001, Bob became one of the founding members of String Therapy. His contributions to the group extended far beyond performance; he was also co-engineer and co-producer on String Therapy’s self-titled release in 2019. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, Bob brought an unmatched energy and expertise that elevated every project he touched.

One of Bob’s most enduring legacies lies in his work with Musicians Against Childhood Cancer (MACC). As a passionate supporter and integral part of the MACC community, Bob wore many hats—recording every band live for years on end, performing on stage, and co-founding Camp F. His tireless efforts helped shape MACC into a powerful force for good within the bluegrass community.

Bob’s studio work earned him national recognition. He, alongside Fishtank Audio, mixed and produced two albums for MACC that garnered prestigious honors from the International Bluegrass Music Association: the 2006 Album of the Year award for *Celebration of Life* (Skaggs Family Records) and the 2012 Recorded Event of the Year award for *Life Goes On* (Rural Rhythm Records). These accolades stand as testaments to both his technical skill and heartfelt commitment to meaningful causes.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Bob was known for his infectious humor and magnetic personality. Whether impersonating Christopher Walken, doing Tony Rice or engaging in late-night antics at festivals, Bob had an uncanny ability to bring laughter wherever he went. He loved fiercely and gave generously—qualities that made him not only a cherished friend but also an irreplaceable presence in countless lives.

Bob found joy in simple pleasures as well—golfing, fishing, camping with family or friends. He was a devoted fan of the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. Music remained ever-present in his life, not just playing it but listening deeply to artists like Rush and Tom Petty who inspired him.

To those who knew him—as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, or friend—Bob was more than just talented; he was unforgettable. His legacy lives on through every note played, every laugh shared and every memory held close by those whose lives he touched.

Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years, Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Kelley; son, Jacob (Fylicia) Kelley of Lancaster, Oh; daughter, Amanda (Adam Dawson) Kelley of Lancaster, Oh; 3 precious granddaughters, Lyla, Hallie and Adaline; parents, Harold and Patricia Kelley of Sebring, Oh; sister, Brenda Kelley of Sebring, Oh; sister-in-law, Jeni (Grant, RIP) Kelley of Boardman, Oh; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Barker of Beloit, Oh; and several in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

May Bob’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him—and may his music continue to echo in our hearts forever as he makes his debut in the Bluegrass Band of Angels.
