Robert David Mattfeld

Robert D. Mattfeld, 90, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, went to be with Jesus on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Campbell Place in Bellefontaine.

Born in November 1935, in Springfield, Ohio, to Blanche and Howard Mattfeld, Bob grew up in Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School. Before graduation, he began building a life of hard work and service, working at Albers Super Market while also starting his six years of service in the Air National Guard, including two years during high school. He later attended Michigan State University and continued his grocery career, working as store manager for Big Bear Stores before joining Super Foods in Bellefontaine, where he worked in store development.

Bob loved Jesus and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to the love of his life, Jeanine, for 67 years. Their life together was a treasured part of his story, and he now joins his beloved wife in eternal rest.

Bob enjoyed golf and traveling and generously gave his time volunteering with the Lions Club, The Gideons International, Logan County History Center, and Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a member. He was a talented artist and sculptor who took great joy in creating works of art and sharing his sculptures with others.

Bob was a kind and caring man who touched the lives of many. He will be remembered for his faith in God, his wonderful sense of humor, his warmth and strength, and his genuine love for others. His devotion to his family, his willingness to share his talents, and the kindness he extended to those around him will remain a lasting part of his legacy.

Bob is survived by his four children and their spouses: Kim and Scott Anderson of West Mansfield, Ohio; Kathy and Gary Wagner of Angola, Indiana; Kris and Deb Mattfeld of Bellefontaine, Ohio; and Kelly and Steve Smith of Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

He also leaves behind his 16 beloved grandchildren: Karen, Joel, Lee (Kristina), Landon (Sule), Lauren (Raul), Kurt (Lauren), Kristen (Bob), Elizabeth (Austin), Hannah, and Rebecca; 10 great-grandchildren: Mason, Justin, Kailynn, Lily, Hazel, Lyle, Ryan, Blake, Andy, and Paxton; and nephews and nieces whom he loved.

In addition to his beloved wife, Jeanine, Bob was preceded in death by his siblings: Patricia (Gilbert) Heller, Alma (Martin) Haemmerle, Howard “Sonny” Mattfeld, and Jon (Marge) Mattfeld.

A memorial service celebrating Bob’s life will be held at a future date to allow family members traveling from out of state and out of the country to attend. Service details will be announced when arrangements are finalized.
