Vern Irvin Woodruff, Jr.

Vern Irvin Woodruff Jr, age 90 of Dunkirk, died on September 21, 2026. Born on May 12, 1936, in Dunkirk, Ohio to the late Vern and Alberta (Chamberlain) Woodruff. He was the thirteenth of fourteen children.

Vern grew up on the family farm outside of Dunkirk. He started school at Dunkirk, which consolidated with Dola in 1952 to form Hardin Northern. He was a member of Hardin Northern’s first football, basketball and baseball teams. He graduated in 1955, but remained active playing basketball with local teams. He was a member of the Washington Grange team, which won the 1960-61 State Grange Basketball Tournament. After graduation, Vern worked primarily as a full-time farmer. However, he worked briefly as a fireman for the Nickel Plate Railroad in 1957-58. He was in the Army National Guard from 1959-65. He started work at Rockwell International in Kenton in 1965 and worked there until retiring in 1995.

Vern married Joan (Putnam-Keeran- D) on August 21, 1971, in Findlay, OH and he is survived by their children Tamara Keeran (Robert-D) Stuber, Calvin (Ann) Keeran, Vern III (Carla) Woodruff and Lisa Schott.

Vern was most proud that all four of his children graduated from college.

He was an avid sports fan (especially Ohio State) and had two TVs side by side to keep up with sports, the news and western movies. In retirement, he took particular interest in the 4-H poultry projects of all his grandchildren. He assisted them with earning many poultry trophies at the Hardin County Fair.

Vern was preceded in death by his wife Joan, his grandsons Kaleb Allen and Jesse Stuber, and his daughter-in-law Joy Keeran. He is survived by his grandchildren John (Ashley) Stuber, Justin (Valerie Kohlwey) Stuber, Vern Woodruff IV, Carl Woodruff, Mariann Woodruff, Melea (Zane) Whitaker, and Mason Schott. His great-grandchildren are Claire Stuber, Olivia Stuber, Jaxon Stuber, Lennox Stuber, and Violet Whitaker.

A celebration of life memorial will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 3 pm to 5 pm at Kenton Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Burial will be at Dunkirk Cemetery at a later date.
